Fresh from his fantastic WKF World Bronze Team Kata Medal Success, Fran Salazar, took time out of his busy training schedule to visit my family in Bournemouth and run a course for the SEKF. Fran who represents Spain, has fifty international medals to his name including World and European titles. He was very humble in his approach to the SEKF students whilst teaching them. However, his demonstration of kata and bunkai techniques were breathtaking to watch and inspired everyone in the dojo to the extent of near disbelief.
The course was split into three sessions, the first, inviting students from green belt and above to learn some advanced kata training drills. The second session which was open to squad members only, Fran taught the kata Anan, which is frequently used in international finals by the Spanish mens kata team. The last session was open to the SEKF elite kata squad in order for Fran to spend intense time perfecting the kata for competition.
What a great day of kata, taught by a great champion! Gracias mi Amigo!
Fran who lives in the same village in Madrid as my wife Angela's parents, has become a true friend. We are preparing an international match between our own students in January 2017, and currently organinsing an invitational 'Weekend of World Champions Kata and Kumite Course' which will be held in Bournemouth, 2017. (Date TBA). In addition to Fran, kumite World legend and current National England Coach Willie Thomas will be passing on his vast knowledge and experience, also England's first World Kumite champion since 2004, the very talented Jordan Thomas will be there to inspire our future stars. Not to be missed!
